Cornwall Council urges carers to seek support

Cornwall Council is encouraging unpaid carers of family members or friends to seek support.

Carers can access free training sessions, social outings, financial advice, grants and support groups from Cornwall Carers Service.

They are also entitled to a carers' assessment to identify their needs.

Andy Virr, cabinet lead for adult social care and health, said it was "absolutely vital" that carers got support for their "invaluable" work.

"You might think that what you do is just looking after someone. But, in reality, it is so much more than that, and there is a wealth of support out there for you," he said.

The council said it also recognised the needs of young carers and young adult carers, who are supported by Kernow Young Carers.

Cornwall Council cabinet lead for children and families Barbara Ellenbroek said: "We know how the strain of caring for a family member can impact a child or young person's physical and emotional health.

"It's so important that anyone providing this sort of support speaks to someone about how this might be affecting them, and to get in touch with the service so that they can access the support they need."
