Drifting traffic cone sparks lifeboat rescue near Boscastle

The crew of an RNLI lifeboat launched to a suspected drifting kayak in Cornwall was surprised to discover the item was actually a traffic cone.

Port Isaac lifeboat was tasked after volunteers at the National Coastwatch Institution spotted what they thought was a paddle and an orange kayak.

The objects were seen floating about a mile (1.6km) out to sea off Boscastle in rough conditions on Sunday.

The RNLI said it showed "the challenges of identifying objects at sea".

Kevin Dingle, lifeboat operations manager of Port Isaac RNLI, said "We are immensely proud of the swift response and professionalism demonstrated by our volunteers in this operation.

"Although this turned out to be a false alarm with good intent, it underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for any eventuality on the water."
