Amazon staff in Coventry walk out on 'Valentine's Day' strike

Amazon workers in Coventry have gone on a three-day strike in a long-running dispute over pay.

More than 1,000 GMB union members are striking until Thursday, to coincide with Valentine's Day on Wednesday.

The union said workers are taking industrial action as part of a campaign to earn £15 an hour and union rights.

Amazon has said the firm regularly reviewed its pay "to ensure we offer competitive wages and benefits".

By April 2024, its minimum starting pay will have increased to £12.30 and £13 per hour, depending on location.

This represents a 20% increase over two years and 50% since 2018, the firm said.

Hundreds of staff went on strike in November to coincide with Black Friday, one of the year's busiest shopping days.

But Amanda Gearing, GMB senior organiser, said the campaign by union members "to win £15 an hour and union rights at Amazon is growing stronger every day"."It's time for Amazon to listen to our members, it's time for £15," she said.
