Cumbria: Teenagers offered performance technology workshops

Teenagers in Cumbria are being offered free performance technology workshops in a project to encourage them to follow a career in the arts.

Upstairs at The Gather in Ennerdale will deliver sessions teaching skills in lighting, sound, filming and streaming to those aged 14 to 18.

The project was recently awarded Arts Council England funding.

Organiser Peter Maher said there were no requirements for applying, just an "interest in technology".

He said three workshops will be hosted from May to August.

A total of 18 places are available for young people living in Cumbria, Mr Maher explained.

The project has been funded by Arts Council England and Edge Hill University, where undergraduates will act as tutors.

"The participants will go from zero to technically competent in just five days, working with a professional musician for two days."

Those taking part will also learn about a career in the arts and studying at university.

"Over the three workshops we aim to have helped 18 young Cumbrians to see a different future for themselves in the arts, even if they are not musicians or actors," Mr Maher added.
