New Magna stop for tram-train network approved

Plans for a new tram-train stop in Rotherham have been approved.

The new stop at Magna Science Adventure Centre will be the first addition to the network since it launched in 2018.

Network Rail and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) said the stop at Templeborough would help residents access employment, walking and cycling opportunities.

The £6.6m scheme will be funded from the Sheffield City Region's £166m Transforming Cities Fund.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, two new staggered low-level tram-train platforms will be installed at Magna, one for each line, connected by a footbridge.

There will also be passenger information, lighting, CCTV and shelters.

It is hoped the stop would provide growth to Magna and support increased investment in the regeneration of the wider Templeborough area.

The planning document said more than 200,000 journeys could be made each year on the tram-train, and with customers struggling to use park-and-ride sites for Meadowhall, Ikea and Centertainment after 07:30 the new stop would also ease pressure on people using cars.

The plans also include creating a further 29 parking spaces to be shared with the science museum's staff and visitors.
