Supermarket retailer Sainsbury's has apologised after some cars broke down after filling up at their petrol station forecourt.

The faulty fuel problems were reported at the garage on Bath Road, Chippenham, on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's confirmed there were ongoing issues with its unleaded fuel. It is not known what has caused the issue.

Many customers took to social media to complain after being affected.

"Got the right fuel, have receipt for it. Car broken down 10 min later. Waiting for AA ever since," said Sylvia Jones.

After contacting the garage afterwards, she was told other customers had also been affected.

"We rang Sainsbury's. They are aware fuel is contaminated so anyone with broken down vehicle please get in touch with them as they have lots of affected customers.

"Obviously [they are] very sorry for the inconvenience."

'Juddering'

Other drivers reported a 'juddering' effect after using the pumps at the supermarket forecourt.

"Had the same issue with my BMW 320d after filling up from Sainsbury's! Dodgy fuel there!" said one in a Facebook post.

Sainsbury's said it was now investigating the cause of the contamination and unleaded fuel was currently unavailable.

The retailer was also unable to confirm how many customers had been affected.

A spokesperson said: "We have received a small number of complaints from customers who used the unleaded pumps at our Chippenham petrol filling station on Wednesday afternoon.

"Unleaded petrol is unavailable while we investigate."

Despite the issue, the forecourt garage has remained open and will 'continue to offer diesel and super unleaded.'

She added: "We will keep our customers updated and we're sorry for the inconvenience this may cause."
