Premier League footballer wins Guernsey award

A Premier League footballer was among those honoured in the island's Sporting Achievement Awards on Thursday night.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott won the Guernsey Sports Commission Trophy.

The award recognises Guernsey's "outstanding performer of the year", and was collected by his mum Stephanie Allen.

Josh Lewis, gold medallist in the Men's Triathlon in the Games, took the Richard Burton Salver.

In total Island Games competitors and organisers took six of the twelve honours available.

Ms Allen said the 20-year-old was "an example to others of what is possible".

She said: "So many people have been right behind him supporting him all the way, and since he was little (playing football) is all he wanted to do."

"He has shown that even if you're from Guernsey, if you really want to do something, and you have the help of good people around you, then you can achieve it".

She added: "If he carries on the way he's going hopefully he'll achieve the best. He'd love to play for England, but wherever he is playing football he'll be happy".

Josh Lewis won the Richard Burton Salver for "outstanding individual sporting achievement of the year by a sportsman resident in Guernsey".

He took gold at the Island Games Men's Individual Triathlon at Rocquaine in July.

Speaking after Thursday's ceremony he said: "There were so many high achievers that it was an absolute honour to be nominated, let alone win it."

On what he hopes to see in the future, he added: "I just hope that more young people get into triathlon earlier.

"I think Guernsey is trying to push that in general, and hopefully we'll have more people on the world stage as well."
