Commonwealth Games: Cyclist Emma Finucane claims second bronze medal

Wales track cyclist Emma Finucane added a second Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the women's individual sprint.

Finucane, 19, finished third with Lowri Thomas and Rhian Edmunds in the team event on the opening day.

She followed this up by defeating England's Sophie Capewell in the bronze medal race.

It was a third Commonwealth Games medal for Wales after para-cyclist James Ball also claimed a silver on the opening day.

Finucane claimed the bronze medal in thrilling fashion in the deciding best-of-three race.

"I was excited to be in the semi-final and then that final race," said Finucane.

"I just had to compose myself, nail my processes and I got the bronze medal. I couldn't believe it, I was so happy and proud of myself for how I did.

"I came into the Games, looking forward to every event and taking each day as it comes and enjoying the moment.

"I've never done anything like this before and to come away on the second day with another bronze medal is amazing.

"I've gone above and beyond all my expectations. I'm pleased with this, it means so much."

Thomas had crashed out in the last 16, while racing against Edmunds who bowed out in the quarter-finals.

Anna Morris, Ella Barnwell, William Roberts and Josh Tarling failed to progress to the medal races in the individual pursuit events.

In the pool, the men's swimming 4x100m freestyle relay of Dan Jones, Matthew Richards, Tom Carswell and Calum Jarvis finished fourth and broke the Welsh record.

Olympic relay gold medallists Richards and Jarvis were fifth and seventh respectively in the 200m freestyle individual event with Scotland's Duncan Scott claiming gold.

Harriet Jones was sixth in the women's 100m butterfly final, while Lewis Fraser finished eighth in the 50m butterfly which was won by England's Ben Proud in a Commonwealth Games record.

Medi Harris qualified third fastest for the 100m backstroke final on Sunday with Charlotte Evans missing out.

The Wales women's table tennis team of Charlotte Carey, Anna Hursey, Chloe Thomas Wu Zhang and Lara Whitton have booked a semi-final place against Malaysia on Sunday evening after victories against Canada and England.

In the women's team gymnastics competition, Mali Morgan, Poppy-Grace Stickler, Jea Maracha, Sofia Micallef and Mia Evans finished fifth behind winners England.

In athletics, Dewi Griffiths finished in 11th place in the men's marathon in a time of 2:17:58, in a race won by Uganda's Victor Kiplangat, who triumphed despite taking a wrong turn in the last kilometre.

Clara Evans finished ninth and Natasha Cockram 12th in the women's event won by Australia's Jessica Stenson.

Gareth Furlong starred in Wales' men's 5-1 hockey victory over Canada with four goals with Gareth Griffiths adding the other.

The Wales women side suffered a second defeat of the tournament when they lost 3-1 to India. Xenna Hughes scored the Wales goal.

In rugby sevens, Wales finished third in Pool C after a spirited display in a 38-24 defeat to Olympic champions Fiji.

Richie Pugh's side failed to qualify for the quarter-finals as they were forced to rue the 31-0 defeat against Canada on the opening day.

With the battle for the lower places still going on, Wales defeated Malaysia 33-14 on Saturday evening and will face England in the first of two games on Sunday. The highest they can finish is ninth and the lowest is 12th.

Opening ceremony flag bearer Tesni Evans and her brother Emyr both won last 32 squash singles matches.

Emily Whitlock and Joel Makin were also successful but Peter Creed was knocked out.

Laura Daniels continued her winning start to the women's lawn bowls singles event with victories over India's Tania Choudury and Northern Ireland's Shauna O'Neill.

Owain Dando, Ross Owen and Jonathan Tomlinson beat the Norfolk Islands to set up a men's triples quarter-final against Scotland on Sunday afternoon.

Christopher Spriggs and Paul Brown lost to New Zealand and England in the men's pair P6-P8 group games.

The men's pairs of Daniel Salmon and Jarred Breen defeated Jamaica 33-8 before losing to Northern Ireland.

The women's fours of Anwen Butten, Sara Nicholls, Caroline Taylor and Ysie White defeated the Niue quartet 28-6 but miss out on quarter-final qualification.

Weightlifter Hannah Powell finished seventh in the women's 49kg final, while Catrin Jones was disappointed after bowing out of the 55kg competition after failing to register a lift in the snatch section.
