Scotland's Neah Evans won Commonwealth Games silver in the women's road race as team-mate Finn Crockett took bronze in the men's event.

Evans, silver medallist in the track cycling points race, finished strongly but was no match for Australia's Georgia Baker in a sprint for the line.

Australia's Sarah Roy won bronze as her team controlled the race throughout.

Crockett, 23, finished third behind winner Aaron Gate, of New Zealand, and South Africa's Daryl Impey.

New Zealand's Gate clinched his fourth gold medal at Birmingham 2022, having already won three track cycling medals in the team pursuit, individual pursuit and points race.

Wales' time-trial bronze medallist Geraint Thomas had launched a late attack and led going into the final kilometre.

But he was hauled back by the remaining members of the breakaway group, which included the England trio of time-trial silver medallist Fred Wright, Ben Turner and Sam Watson.

Northern Ireland's Matthew Teggart finished fourth, ahead of Wright, with Turner crossing the line seventh and 2018 Tour de France champion Thomas in eighth.

The Isle of Man's legendary sprinter Mark Cavendish was among the pre-race favourites - but he was left behind in the peloton as a 15-man group led for the majority of the 160km race.

On the women's seven-lap circuit through the streets of Warwick, Wales' Eluned King finished eighth with England's Alice Barnes in 10th.

But it was Australia who added to their road cycling success after Grace Brown won gold in the women's time trial.

Brown was part of a six-person Australia team who were rarely off the front, chasing down breakaways and ensuring a sprint finish after 112km.

Baker ultimately claimed her third gold medal of the games, adding to her victories in the team pursuit and points race on the track.
