Former Glamorgan all-rounder Gwyn Richards has died at the age of 71.

He made more than 200 appearances for the county across first class and one-day matches between 1971 and 1979.

Richards, a middle order batter and off-spinner, played a leading role in helping Glamorgan to their first limited-overs final, when they lost to Middlesex in the Gillette Cup in 1977.

He was active in the county's Former Players' Association and attended the club's annual awards dinner this month.

Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris paid tribute to Richards on the club website: "We are shocked and saddened by the news of Gwyn's passing.

"He held a very special place in the history of Glamorgan County Cricket Club as he was in the team of 1977 that played in the club's first ever one-day final against Middlesex at Lord's.

"A lovely man who was a talented batter and off-spinner, Gwyn has also overseen in recent years the annual gatherings of the Glamorgan Former Players' Association.

"We send our deepest condolences to his family and wide circle of friends at this most difficult time."
