Tom Abell stepped down as Somerset captain after the end of last season but is to stay with the club

Somerset all-rounder Tom Abell has signed a two-year contract extension to stay with the club until at least the end of the 2026 season.

The 29-year-old Somerset academy graduate made his debut in 2014 and averaged 31.10 in the County Championship last season in 13 matches.

He also played in 16 T20 Blast matches for the club as they took the title last summer.

In November he stepped down as captain after seven years in the role.

"I'm a Somerset boy and when I was young, I dreamt of playing for the club," Abell told the club website., external

"I've been fortunate to grow up here, and watching Somerset was inspirational for me as a kid. I've been lucky enough to represent the club for almost 10 years, and I can't imagine being anywhere else."

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry said: "Tom has become something of a talisman for Somerset over recent years.

"He is a player who epitomises everything that it means to play for the club. He has developed into a genuinely exceptional multi-format cricketer and is more determined than ever to ensure that Somerset are competing for silverware on all fronts."
