Peter Wright knocked out of Grand Slam of Darts by Stephen Bunting

World number two Peter Wright was knocked out of the Grand Slam of Darts when he was beaten 5-3 by Stephen Bunting in Group E.

The European champion struggled to get going and exited the event at the group stage for the third time in four years.

Michael van Gerwen advanced to the last 16 by defeating Martijn Kleermaker 5-4 to top Group D.

The world number three built on his win over Rob Cross and edged out his fellow Dutchman in the final leg.

The score was tied at 4-4 before three-time PDC world champion Van Gerwen hit double two for the match.

Nathan Aspinall, who had already qualified for the next round, lost to Ricardo Pietreczko 5-4.

Dave Chisnall edged the already qualified Stowe Buntz 5-4 and Cross defeated Fallon Sherrock 5-2, while Damon Heta trailed all match before coming through to beat Beau Greaves 5-4.
