  2. 'They needed to respond in the right way and they really did that'published at 10:52 22 April

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards believes Arsenal's 2-0 win at Wolves on Saturday got last weekend's home defeat by Aston Villa "out of their system".

Mikel Arteta's side moved back to the top of the Premier League and put the pressure back on to title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

"There's some pretty unfair things that have been said about Arsenal and Mikel Arteta since that difficult defeat by Aston Villa," Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"Words like 'chokers' and 'bottle-jobs' have been thrown around, but they haven't done that.

"That was their first league defeat of 2024. They needed to respond in the right way and they really did that.

"They controlled the game, got their noses in front just before half-time and then showed their class.

"They have got that Villa defeat out of their system, bounced back, and showed they have the mental strength to deal with a setback like that.

"The good thing for them is now they can put the pressure back on to Manchester City and Liverpool who are now chasing them.

"I was really impressed by them because we all know what a sucker punch that defeat was and everybody talking about it ending their title challenge. To come out like they did and control things like they did was impressive. Their big players showed up.

"They're asking questions of Manchester City and Liverpool and that's all they can do."

  3. Your views on Wolves v Arsenalpublished at 09:28 22 April

    Your views banner

We asked for your views on Wolves' defeat by Arsenal on Saturday.

Here are some of your answers:

    Wolves fans

Kieran: Good performance despite all the injuries we have. We need players back. Bit of a bad run of form but I know we can win if we got some players back. On to and the next one and come on, you Wolves.

Philip: Wolves have a Championship squad of players surviving in the Premier League. Gary O Neil is a miracle worker and every Wolves supporter should be proud of his and the players' achievements.

Mike: To only lose 2-0 against Arsenal with our woefully small squad is OK, but we have to strengthen for next season or we will start losing by more to the ‘ordinary’ teams and could be relegation fodder.

    Arsenal fans

Brian: Not impressed with the performance or the result. Can do better, must do better to win the Premier League.

Naru: We looked tired and leggy but managed to secure a win against a difficult side. Sometimes we need an ugly win and this result will boost team spirit, in addition, another clean sheet at an away match. Great result.

Tim: Very efficient performance. Another clean sheet and three points away from home. Cannot ask for a lot more after a busy week.

  4. 'Arsenal showed mental strength but O'Neil will be happy with Wolves' spirit'published at 08:02 22 April

Former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson believes both Mikel Arteta and Gary O'Neil will be happy with their sides' respective performances in Saturday's 2-0 win for Arsenal at Molineux.

The Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League but were made to work by a Wolves side ravaged by injuries.

"Arsenal showed a lot of mental strength," Grayson told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"They could have had a harder fixture with how depleted Wolves were with the injury situation, but Wolves played really well.

"They were good out of possession, on the counter-attack and defended the 18-yard box well.

"Arsenal just scored at the right time. They took the wind out of the sails of Wolves two minutes before half-time. Then, in the second half, they really upped the ante.

"It felt inevitable it would be 2-0 very soon but Wolves withstood that and created one or two half opportunities and got into some good positions without really working David Raya. Then Arsenal hit them on the counter and put the game to bed.

"Arsenal will be happy and relieved. On the other side of it, Gary O'Neil will be really happy with Wolves' performance and the heart, spirit and desire his team showed."

  6. Wolves 0-2 Arsenal: What Arteta said published at 22:06 20 April

Mikel Arteta spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Arsenal's win against Wolves: "It was a very good response, so proud of them. We reacted in the right way. We deserved to win the game and got another clean sheet again. Obviously disappointed to lose against Bayern, small margins but we have five games to go and we are top again.

"Even at 2-0 you are never sure and they [Wolves] are a good side, they made some changes and caused us some problems.

On Leandro Trossard's goal: "They all count and he made an impact again for the team and that's what we need."

On keeping another clean sheet: "We've been really consistent defensively and that's the platform needed to win games in this league. All we can do is win our games and when you see the form that we are in, in the calendar year, it is unbelievable and you are still not top but it's the quality of this league."

  7. Wolves 0-2 Arsenal: Analysispublished at 22:01 20 April

Sometimes, statistics do not tell the whole story of a game.

Arsenal had a lot of shots at Molineux and a lot of possession.

But they dominated the game without being in control. And they scored a goal but without putting it to bed.

Leandro Trossard's goal was perfectly timed as it prevented a few nerves setting in during the interval and Wolves never really convinced in terms of getting an equaliser.

And, in the period Arsenal are in - and the results they have endured in the past week - all that mattered on this particular occasion was that they won.

In that sense, it is job done for Mikel Arteta and his players - and now on to Chelsea.

  8. Wolves 0-2 Arsenal: Key statspublished at 21:39 20 April

    • Wolves have lost each of their past six Premier League games against Arsenal, only against Liverpool between January 2011 and May 2022 (11 games) have they suffered a longer run of successive defeats against a side.

    • Arsenal have now kept a clean sheet in each of their past six Premier League away games, only Chelsea in December 2008 and Manchester United in February 2009 (both 7) have enjoyed longer such runs in the competition’s history.

    • Wolves have lost four of their past six Premier League games at Molineux (W2), while overall, they’re without a win in five games (D2 L3) – it’s their longest such run within a season of the competition since November 2022 (D1 L4).

    • Arsenal have won 11 of their 13 Premier League games in 2024 (D1 L1), while they’ve opened the scoring in 25 different top-flight matches this term, last doing so more often in 2004-05 (30).

    • Arsenal have recorded 15 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, at least five more than any other side, while it’s their most in a campaign since 2015-16 (18).

    • Since the start of last season, only Erling Haaland (27), Mohamed Salah (26) and Ollie Watkins (24) have been involved in more Premier League goals away from home than Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard (23 – 14 goals, 9 assists). Indeed, his goal was his 50th goal involvement (31 goals, 19 assists).

  9. Full-time: Wolves 0-2 Arsenalpublished at 21:34 20 April

Arsenal put their Champions League disappointment firmly in the past to beat Wolves at Molineux and move back to the top of the Premier League.

Having blown their chance to leapfrog Pep Guardiola's side six days ago by losing at home to Aston Villa, then been knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich on Wednesday, it was a welcome triumph for Mikel Arteta's men.

Leandro Trossard's strike in the last minute of the opening period may not have been the most eye-catching of the Belgian's career but it was perfectly timed.

It came at the end of a half where Arsenal seemed to have got stuck after a bright start and nearly fell behind to Gary O'Neil's injury-ravaged side.

The visitors dominated the second half too but were unable to carve out the clear chances that would have allowed them to take the game out of reach.

Captain Martin Odegaard added the second deep into stoppage time at the end of the game, turning in from a tight angle after his initial cross had been blocked.

The result means Arsenal are now a point clear of City, with a better goal difference but having played a game more.

They have the chance to apply some significant pressure to the defending champions when they entertain beaten FA Cup semi-finalists Chelsea on Tuesday.

  11. Sutton's prediction: Wolves v Arsenalpublished at 13:56 20 April

    Chris Sutton's predictions graphic

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on singer-songwriter and Arsenal fan Sam Tompkins.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

This is a massive game for Arsenal but it definitely helps them that Wolves are on a pretty terrible run, without a win in four games.

The talk this week about the Gunners has been whether the wheels are coming off for Mikel Arteta's side, but I don't think that's the case.

They maybe lacked a bit of composure in their defeat by Aston Villa but Villa have got some very good players, as do Bayern Munich, who beat them in Germany on Wednesday.

I'd put Arsenal's Champions League defeat down to their failure to win the first leg at Emirates Stadium, and it would have been a different story if Bukayo Saka hadn't dived when he was through on goal late on in that game.

I'm still probably basing this prediction more on Wolves' form than on Arsenal's but I do think the Gunners will find a way to win at Molineux.

I hope they do too, because I don't want Manchester City to have it all their own way in the run-in.

    Sam's prediction: 0-3

This is a make or break game for us and I think the players will respond to that.

  12. Arteta on 'motivation' to go top, FA Cup replays and Wolvespublished at 14:28 19 April

    Phil Cartwright
    BBC Sport journalist

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Wolves at Molineux.

Here are the main headlines from his news conference:

    • Jurrien Timber will not be involved against Wolves but is expected to play for Arsenal's under-23 side in the near future, as he continues his comeback from long-term injury. Arteta reported no other injury concerns for Saturday's game.

    • On the importance of Saturday's game following successive defeats in the Premier League and Champions League: "The context is clear - if we win, we go top of the league. If you need anything else to be motivated, you need anything else to go with your mind clear, you have a problem."

    • Asked about the psychological growth of his team during his reign, Arteta said: "It's been an intense journey. When you are fighting at such a level, you know you are going to have to go through [disappointing moments]. This industry constantly tests your resilience and your ego. When things go well or when things don't go well, you have to be able to navigate those moments, understand the context and look at the positives."

    • On the scrapping of replays in the FA Cup, he said: "I understand every point of view, mine is to protect our players. When I look at the amount of minutes and games they've played in the past two seasons with no breaks, and what they're going to have to play over the next two years, it's not healthy. Somewhere, I'm not saying is has to be that, somehow we have to reduce the calendar."

    • Arteta paid tribute to former chairman Sir Chips Keswick, who has died aged 84. "He was chairman when I was captain, he was very well respected and loved," said the Spaniard.

    • Gary O'Neil has done an "unbelievable" job at Wolves, said Arteta, adding: "You can tell how well they are coached, the spirit of the team, the difficulties they create against every opponent. It will be tough but we have prepared well."

  13. 'We've got a great chance' - Seamanpublished at 11:02 19 April

    Bukayo SakaImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal legend David Seaman believes the Gunners are in a strong position to win the Premier League this season.

The North Londoners are two points below Manchester City with six games remaining.

"Am I confident? Yes, there's three teams in it and, so long as Arsenal keep their players fit, then we've got a great chance," the former goalkeeper said.

"Our squad is not as big as Liverpool's is and City's is, but if Arsenal can keep everyone fit and ready, we've got a great chance."

Seaman is pleased with the growth the Gunners have experienced under Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard taking over at the club when they were 10th in 2019.

"We struggled last year through injuries, but now we're at a different level at Arsenal, we are contenders whereas before we sometimes celebrated getting in the top four," he added.

"But now we're in contention every season so that shows the improvement in the team."

  15. 'No capitulation, no wobble'published at 15:56 18 April

BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown byline banner

There is talk of Arsenal unravelling again this season after recent results but I think they have been incredible.

Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League was a massive game on that stage.

They did all right at home and came back to draw. It was always about managing the load in between the Champions League and the Premier League.

Aston Villa capitalised on Sunday. They had played in Europe too but they did Arsenal in the second half. One poor half from the Gunners has cost them. Going to Munich was always going to be difficult and now they have a chance to react.

Arsenal cannot be too critical of themselves. We are talking about one bad half of football and then going to Bayern Munich and going toe-to-toe with them.

Let's say how far Arsenal have come. Let's look at the positives. There is no capitulation, there is no wobble - they are still getting better and better.

They can bounce back against Wolves on Saturday. They are an unpredictable side to play and have been very good this season. They have fallen away a little of late but you would expect a really dominant Arsenal performance against them.

It still won't be easy. Mentally, the pure drain from the week they have had will have a lasting effect. Can they win though? Yes.

With no FA Cup either, not having the extra games now could help Arsenal. The semi-finals in Europe were going to be key to those in the title race and they haven't got that now.

They can now manage the weeks ahead and they should still have a strong finish.

  16. 'Risky' to change style now - Fabregaspublished at 15:56 18 April

    planet premier league podcast graphic

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas spoke to the Planet Premier League podcast about the merits of tweaking the Gunners' attacking style in big matches: "When you got to this stage playing in a certain way I don't think it's that easy now to convince the players to change it all the way.

"[Bukayo] Saka and [Gabriel] Martinelli are proper, proper wingers. They love to be on the line. They are not players to hold on their positions inside.

"At this stage of the season, and when there are certain things that have worked so well for you in the past couple of years, changing could be risky.”
