  1. A need for 'killer instinct' and Gilmour is 'excelling'published at 09:21 23 August 2023

    Albion Unlimited podcast image

BBC Radio Sussex reporter Johnny Cantor has been discussing Brighton's unbeaten start to the season on the Albion Unlimited podcast: "Sometimes you can't dominate for 90 minutes, particularly not in the Premier League, so when your chances come you have to take them and push on for the next. People always say in commentary that you have to go for the next one and put the game to bed, but there's so many attacking options for Albion.

"We've had six different goalscorers already, we've only played two games, and Danny Welbeck, who started both games, hasn't scored yet. So that just goes to show the options that Roberto de Zerbi has got. I think it's providing that killer instinct, that's what Albion need to adopt, because in the past there have been times in games where they've created chances and it's come back to hurt them."

Former Brighton striker Warren Aspinall also gave his assessment on midfielder Billy Gilmour: "He doesn't give the ball away much, he wants the ball all the time and doesn't shy away from it, he's full of confidence, good with both feet, and drives the team forward. I think he's a wonderful talent. You saw other pundits, when he came on the scene at 18-years-old, say that this lad was going to be world-class. It takes a lot for Graeme Souness to say that about a player.

"He just needs consistent games and we will see him get better and better. It's absolutely right that partnerships are going to switch and change because we want to fight on all four fronts. This season, it's not just about the league, it's about the cup games and playing in Europe.

"But when he does get sat down and told that he's not going to play, he doesn't go and sulk like other players do. He just thinks it's a team game, I'll go and work hard for the team, and when called upon I will do my best. That's what he's doing - he's excelling, I think."

  2. 'The Seagulls look set for another memorable campaign'published at 12:32 22 August 2023

There have been worse weeks in the history of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club. £115m banked, six points out of six, eight goals scored in two games and top spot in the Premier League standings.

The sale of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea was met with the normal chorus of "Brighton are the next Southampton." Some Blues fans gleefully declared they would be throwing a party when the Albion are relegated on account of Chelsea's insistence they would not need to pay more than £80m for Caicedo, before having to break the British transfer record less than two weeks later.

Although only two games into the season, any champagne already bought for said parties will probably need to remain on ice for a little while yet.

The loss of Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister has barely been felt. If anything, Brighton look even better this season. The 10 minute spell immediately after half-time in which they scored three at Wolves on Saturday was world-class football that not many teams on the planet would have been able to live with.

How does the good ship Brighton keep sailing despite the constant pillaging of key players? Roberto De Zerbi provided an answer when asked about Caicedo leaving.

"Other clubs can buy our players, but they cannot buy our soul or spirit." Soul and spirit which combined with the special talents of De Zerbi means the Seagulls look set for another memorable campaign.

  3. Mitoma goal 'like Messi at his very best'published at 12:09 22 August 2023

Former Chelsea and Scotland winger Pat Nevin has been speaking to BBC Sport about his favourite moment from the Premier League weekend: "I will admit a personal bias, as this [moment of the weekend] involved my favourite player in England last season.

"No, it wasn't Luis Diaz and his beautiful, cheeky goal against Bournemouth.

"It wasn't even former Chicago Fire striker Jhon Duran, coming on as sub for Aston Villa. It then only took him 24 seconds to score his first Premier League goal.

"My moment was the opening goal by Kaoru Mitoma for Brighton against Wolves. If you haven't seen it yet, go looking online now, this is like Lionel Messi at his very best.

"It wasn't just the skill from the Japanese winger, that old-fashioned slalom dribbling, which I love, and spent a career trying to perfect. It was the way he didn't throw himself to the ground after the first tackle, while yelping for a foul. He stayed on his feet and we stay entranced by those skills."

  4. March is 'flourishing' under De Zerbipublished at 09:12 22 August 2023

Solly March continues to excel at Brighton.

Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club March is "thriving" and "flourishing".

  5. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:29 21 August 2023

    Your Views

We asked for your views on Saturday's game between Wolves and Brighton.

Here are some of your comments:

    Wolves fans

Murray: If we are going to play a back four, we need full-backs who can defend. This rules out Ait-Nouri and Semedo, who rarely get goal-side of the opposing wingers, are often stranded yards away, and are collectively responsible for four of the five goals conceded so far this season. This needs to be resolved quickly.

Rob: Yes, we struggled. Yes we need a good striker. But not Silva - please. He has been a total waste of money, given nothing in return for the investment, froze in front of goal and we're still in the position as last season when he was away elsewhere. Proof being, he comes off, Hwang comes on and scores. Sell Silva and cut your losses.

Steve: Bottom three again looking forward to Championship football next season. I don’t see a way forward if you’re not playing the strikers you have from the beginning. All this soaking up pressure malarkey instead of good attacking football and scaring the opposition. The same team played on Monday with even less success. Isn’t that a clue?

Michael: Same old story, can't take our chances. A reality check after last week's unlucky loss. On the bright side Brighton beat us 5-0 last time so a slight improvement. It is in attack we need strengthening. I am a bit concerned at the description of challenges as half-hearted. This early in the season?

    Brighton fans

Gordon: Roberto De Zerbi seems to find a way to cover holes and cement the team when some of our best players are sold, and they play just as well if not better. Unfortunately it can’t be said if De Zerbi decides to move on to a bigger club and takes his coaching staff with him. There are very few managers who have his ability.

Mick: A similar game to the previous week. Dunk and Webster looked very secure at the back. Gilmore very busy and effective. Mitoma, March and Enciso were almost unplayable at times. Took our foot off the gas at 4-0. Wolves looked dangerous at times but were wasteful. Still need a defensive midfielder. Onwards and upwards.

Sam: Two games in, eight goals scored and top of the league. This club never ceases to amaze! We could do with a holding midfield player as we do look a little open at times on the counter, however, Gilmour looked great and there are no words for Mitoma’s opener. Enciso was the best player on the pitch and we have such depth now! Just wow!

Steven: What a performance! After Wolves had a good game against Manchester United, I thought we might find this game tough. However, I was very wrong and this squad is showing their quality. What a start to what will be another great season.

  6. Brighton 'will punish you'published at 09:33 21 August 2023

Alan Shearer was full of praise for Roberto De Zerbi's "ruthless" Brighton side after they beat Wolves 4-1 on Saturday.

After beating Luton Town by the same score line last week, Albion successfully replicated their commendable performance at Molineux.

Shearer told Match of the Day: "If you're not at it, this Brighton team will ruthlessly punish you.

"That's exactly what they did to Wolves. If you don't stay and run with your players they will punish you.

"They move the ball so quickly, they are exceptional at passing. They could've had more goals, they were brilliant."
