Dundee United have announced the signing of former Motherwell striker Louis Moult on a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old scored 50 goals in a successful first spell at Fir Park, but injuries plagued the forward's career south of the border after his departure from Lanarkshire in 2018.

Moult re-joined Motherwell on loan last term from Burton, who released him this summer, but his second stint was curtailed mid-season due to more fitness issues.

United boss Jim Goodwin has "no doubt" that the striker "will be invaluable" for his side this campaign.

"We are absolutely delighted to bring someone with Louis’ quality," he added.

"He is a proven goalscorer. It’s an area of the squad we have been looking to strengthen and we hope it’s a signing that will excite the fans."

Moult is available for selection for Tuesday's Viaplay Cup group game against Partick Thistle.

Dundee United fans were "entitled to vent their frustration" at the team following Saturday's shock Viaplay Cup defeat to Spartans, says manager Jim Goodwin.

In their first competitive game since being relegated from the Premiership last season, United suffered an opening group defeat to the fourth-tier side through a Blair Henderson winner.

Goodwin says his side "need to bounce back" when they host fellow Championship club Partick Thistle on Tuesday.

"Saturday's result was extremely disappointing for everybody," he adds. "It certainly wasn't the start we wanted to the new campaign.

"I think emotions are always running high after games and we understand the disappointment. When you're in this industry, you've got to take the criticism when it comes your way.

"This is a big club and there's a huge level of expectation here. We're all desperately trying to be successful."

Despite the disappointing start, Goodwin believes he has "good options throughout" his squad.

But the Tannadice boss is "going to continue to try and strengthen" his team, with "positive news in the next 24 to 48 hours" expected on an incoming forward.

Jim Goodwin admitted Saturday's Viaplay Cup defeat by Spartans was "extremely disappointing " but stressed "it's very early days".

United, relegated from the Scottish Premiership last season, lost 1-0 to the League 2 newcomers at Ainslie Park, with Blair Henderson netting the only goal early on.

The visitors won a second-half penalty when Cammy Russell fouled Scott McMann but Tony Watt's spot-kick was saved by Blair Carswell.

"It was sloppy from our point of view," Goodwin told BBC Scotland. "In the first half, the build-up and the tempo was very slow.

"We allowed Spartans to get back behind the ball in numbers too often instead of playing the forward pass a little bit earlier. The second half was better, we had a bit more control.

"The problem is when you give lower league opposition a goal advantage, they have something to hang on to. I have to give Spartans great credit but it's very, very disappointing. The least we should be coming away from here with is a clean sheet."

Travelling fans voiced their displeasure at the result and Goodwin said, "the reaction from the supporters is expected, it's only natural".

"It doesn't matter what club you're at, supporters expect you to beat lower league opposition," he added.

"Unfortunately today we came up short. There's no glossing over the cracks from us. We're still a very new team.

"It's the first game of the season. Of course we wanted to start on a positive note and it's extremely disappointing to lose the game but it's very early days.

"It will take time but we'll get there."

United host Partick Thistle in their next Group B fixture on Tuesday.

Spartans shocked Dundee United with a 1-0 win in their Viaplay Cup opener.

Blair Henderson struck the only goal from close range in the 11th minute.

United won a second-half penalty when Cammy Russell fouled Scott McMann but Tony Watt's spot-kick was saved by Blair Carswell.

Elsewhere in Group B, Peterhead and Partick Thistle drew 1-1, with Thistle winning the resulting penalty shootout. United host Thistle on Tuesday, when Scottish League 2 newcomers Spartans are at home to Falkirk.

Goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and defender Charlie Mulgrew are free to leave Dundee United, having not been given squad numbers, manager Jim Goodwin says.

"Yeah, we've had conversations with both players, honest conversations," he said when asked about the pair on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound.

"Have to say they were both very professional in their understanding of what we're trying to do. Charlie, he's had a terrific career - he's not finished yet I don't think, he'll still have another move in him if that's what he opts to do.

"We've got a new singing in Kevin Holt in that position and a young lad in Ross Graham who is desperate for his opportunity and we don't want to block up that pathway.

"With Mark, it's a change I wanted to make. We've brought in Jack Walkton, a top goalkeeper, with English Championship experience. He's already experienced two promotions with previous clubs and we're hoping that he can get a third here with Dundee United."

Dundee United made approaching £187,000 from the release of players for last year's World Cup in Qatar.

Fifa paid out $209m (£160.91m) to 440 clubs, with the world governing body indicating the overall sum represented a payment of $10,950 (£9,388) per day for every player.

United, who were subsequently relegated from the Scottish Premiership, had Australia's Aziz Behich and Welshman Dylan Levitt at the tournament, with Levitt having since joined Hibernian.
