Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Manchester United will "know they have got away with one" after scraping through to the FA Cup final.

United eventually triumphed over Championship Coventry City on penalties after relinquishing a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

"When it went 3-0 I was going to praise United for the way they handled the situation, playing against a lower level side and making good decisions - defensively being good, passing the ball out well, controlling the game," he told the Football Daily podcast.

"The Manchester United implosion from 70 minutes was wild to see.

"The moment Coventry scored the belief went up and they started to find gaps.

"United stopped doing the things that got them to that point, players were going down, they had to make changes and their bench is probably as light as we've ever seen it.

"You could see Erik ten Hag couldn't affect the game in that way. It was incredible to see Coventry score the first, second, and then equalise in stoppage time.

"Coventry will deep down be happy because they know they took United all the way. From the United side, they're through to another final - they're third in two years - but they know they got away with one.

"The side that is happier is the side that have lost."

  2. 'The most humiliating victory I've seen for a long time'published at 08:36 22 April

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards says Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag looked like "somebody who knew the writing was on the wall" during the climax of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final.

United gave away a 3-0 lead against Championship side Coventry City before a marginal VAR offside call spared them a last-second defeat. They eventually triumphed on penalties.

"It's the most humiliating victory I've seen for a long time," Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"Yes they're in another final - great. But that's where the positivity ends.

"They were outplayed in the second half and they were outplayed in extra time.

"There's no way United can come out of that and say it is a good day for them. The only good thing about it was the result. Everything else exposed how soft they are, the lack of leadership and the lack of character.

"They took their foot off the gas and took Coventry too lightly - and nearly paid the ultimate price.

"They were on the ropes and a toenail VAR decision has spared them. They were 20 seconds from going out."

Speculation will continue over Ten Hag's future and Edwards believes the performance at Wembley will be decisive for co-owners Joel and Avram Glazer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and new technical director Jason Wilcox, who all watched proceedings from the Royal Box.

"Manchester United should be ashamed. They should be embarrassed," he added.

"Having said that, they can be proud of the result and of the fact they are in another cup final.

"They were schooled by a Championship side in that second half and it exposed all the things we have been worried about with them as a team and Ten Hag as a manager. He looks like a manager crestfallen, crushed and somebody who knew the writing was on the wall for them.

"I don't think Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are thinking he's the right manager for them.

"They have huge problems but they're in the cup final and could end the season with a trophy. That makes no sense to me - but that's football."

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana to BBC Sport: "It's a mixed feeling. We went through, that's why we came here.

"It was a tough game at the end. We were in control. After so many individual mistakes we conceded three goals. The most important thing is to win. We have to look forward to the coming games.

"Somehow we lost control of the game.

"We are Man Utd. We must win. We feel good, we feel happy to be in a final. We'll come back here to win.

"The most important thing is the victory. We're in the final, that's what matters."

  5. 'It's mixed feelings' - Ten Hagpublished at 19:19 21 April

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's mixed feelings. The way we did it isn't OK.

"We should have managed it better but it's a huge performance. If you analyse the game we controlled 75 minutes but then allowed them to return into the game.

"I have to give a compliment to the opponent. They believed but we allowed them. We should managed it better.

"I don't think heads dropped but we had many setbacks and maybe it's human but it's not acceptable.

"We have to show resilience. By the end we did show resilience and determination to win the shootout. When you are so in control you should win easy."

On his mindset: "I am always calm, I focus and know my players can shoot penalties. I'm always confident Andre [Onana] will catch minimum one.

"I was quite convinced but when the first is a mis-hit then you never know."

On facing Man City in the final: "We have to face the best team in the world but we showed last season that if we execute our plan over 90 minutes we have a chance to win.

"It's not going to be easy but we have an opportunity and we have to go for it."

  6. Coventry 3-3 Man Utd (2-4 pens): Key statspublished at 18:49 21 April

    • Manchester United have reached the FA Cup final for a record 22nd time, reaching the final in back-to-back seasons for the first time since doing so in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

    • Each of the last 15 FA Cup semi-finals between a Premier League club and lower league opponent have seen the top-flight club progress to the final; five of the previous six teams to do so have gone on to lift the trophy.

    • Manchester United have become the first team to progress through an FA Cup semi-final via penalties in back-to-back seasons, having also eliminated Brighton at this stage last season.

    • Manchester United failed to win a game (in normal or extra-time) that they led by three goals in for the first time since their 5-5 draw with West Bromwich Albion in May 2013 in what was Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge of the Red Devils.

    • United have conceded 74 goals across all competitions this season, their most in a campaign since 1978-79 (also 74). They have conceded 3 or more goals in 14 different matches this season, their most since 1962-63 (also 14).

    • Bruno Fernandes (13 goals, 10 assists) is the only Premier League player to both score 10+ goals and assist 10+ goals across all competitions in the last four seasons. He has scored in four consecutive appearances for the first time since November 2020.

    • Haji Wright scored the second 90th minute goal Manchester United have ever conceded at Wembley Stadium after Dean Saunders’ strike for Aston Villa in the 1994 League Cup final (excluding extra-time). Coventry City have scored more 90th minute goals than any other team in the FA Cup this season (4) with Wright also netting in stoppage time against Wolves in the previous round.

  7. Full-time: Coventry 3-3 Man Utd (2-4 on penalties)published at 18:28 21 April

Manchester United scraped into the FA Cup final on penalties despite throwing away a three-goal lead against Championship side Coventry in an epic semi-final at Wembley.

In a very modern-day thriller, United came out on top in a penalty shootout they were losing at one stage.

A quite remarkable contest only got that far because Victor Torp's effort in injury time in extra time was ruled out for offside by video assistant referee Peter Bankes.

But after Bradley Collins saved United's first kick, from Casemiro, Andre Onana denied Callum O'Hare, then unsettled Ben Sheaf with some verbal jousting - and the Coventry captain missed - allowing Rasmus Hojlund to win it.

  8. Sutton's predictions: Coventry v Man Utdpublished at 11:01 21 April

    Sutton's predictions

This week, BBC Football expert Chris Sutton is taking on singer-songwriter and Arsenal fan Sam Tompkins to predict the results of the FA Cup semi-final.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Coventry are not in the greatest form in the Championship, with three defeats in their past four games, but I am a romantic at heart and I believe in fairytales too.

It is written in the stars that Sky Blues boss Mark Robins wins this tie, against his former club.

My old Norwich team-mate famously scored an FA Cup third-round winner for Manchester United in 1990 that saved Sir Alex Ferguson's job, but now I think he will push Erik ten Hag closer to the exit door.

Some United fans get very angry on social media whenever I predict they will lose, like last week when I thought Bournemouth would beat them.

But, while I did not get the result right on that occasion, another weak United performance in their 2-2 draw validated everything I said about them.

United should be beating Coventry comfortably but they have lacked consistency all season and I don't have faith in them to suddenly find it now.

So, let me dream a little here. I've got great memories of the 1987 final, when Keith Houchen's diving header helped Coventry upset Tottenham and lift the FA Cup, and what a day it would be for them if they win.

    Sam's prediction: 1-3

I would love to see Coventry in the final but I have got a United fan right next to me as I make this prediction, so I should probably be nice... he's telling me to say 6-0 and that's not going to happen, but I do think they will win.

  10. 'They mix a fantastic five minutes with a really bad 15'published at 13:57 20 April

    Planet Premier League podcast graphic

Former Premier League midfielder Cesc Fabregas spoke to the Planet Premier League podcast about Manchester United's poor form: “It's a question of consistency with Manchester United. They have a lot of ups and downs.

"You watch their games and they mix a fantastic five minutes with really bad next 15. Then all of a sudden they come back, start playing very well and they have their moments - like when they're winning against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge the other week.

"There were moments I was thinking this Manchester United are going to score another goal because they were just keeping the ball. Chelsea couldn't hold on to the ball. They couldn't recover. Tey were all over the place.

"All of a sudden they managed to lose a game... we are really not used to seeing a Manchester United team like this.”

Fabregas revealed that there were talks about a move to Old Trafford before he joined Arsenal: "There were some conversations with my parents [and Manchester United], but Arsenal were the ones that went full on.

"When Gerard Pique went to Manchester United, I think they were more after him than me. I think they were talking to three or four of the players at the academy in Barcelona, but for me it was always Arsenal."
