  1. West Ham 2-0 Manchester United: What Shaw saidpublished at 15:22 23 December 2023

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw speaking to TNT Sports: "[It was] just not good enough really. We have to win games. We keep losing games, losing points, and we're making it very hard for ourselves.

"Especially in that second half, not good enough. First half, I think we controlled the game. If we score the first goal then maybe the result is different, but we don't so we suffered in the second half and it's not good enough.

"The pass was an unbelievable pass. It got a bit of luck with the rebound and that's that. The second goal is a mistake but that doesn't matter. From the start of the second half, we weren't the same as the first half and it showed. That's why I'm here now and we've lost three points again."

On Manchester United going four games without a goal: "It's tough to think what's going on. I think maybe we're just not creating enough and when we do, on the other hand, we're not clinical.

"Maybe it could be a lack of confidence at the moment. Sometimes that's normal in football, it happens. Like I said, we have to try and keep staying positive. We've got another big game coming up against Aston Villa so we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and go again. It's a home game and we can't keep dropping points, we have to win games."

On whether it's difficult to stay positive: "Yeah it is, but it's our job. We have to stay positive. This is Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and like I said before it's not good enough. We know that and we have to dig deep, look at ourselves in the mirror, question ourselves, and go from there."

  2. West Ham 2-0 Manchester United: What Ten Hag saidpublished at 15:11 23 December 2023

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it was a decent 72 minutes where we didn't take our chances. We should have gone in the lead, but we didn't, and then it was one moment of switching off.

"We tried. West Ham weren't running in behind us for a long period in the game and then they got the goal, and then of course you encourage the team. From that moment they [West Ham] were very aggressive, defending the box, and it's difficult to create a chance."

On Alejandro Garnacho's miss: "I think he is confident, he is in good form at the moment. He was one on one with the goalkeeper and he could have taken it, but we didn't."

On Manchester United's poor record against top opposition: "At this moment, we are not top. We saw last week that against the top of this league we were head-to-head. We didn't score, we had the best opportunities of the game and there we defended very well for 90 minutes. That has to be always our standard, like what we did there [against Liverpool]. You have to bring that to every game on the pitch."

On what he would change from this year: "In 2023, we won a cup, we played in the FA Cup final, we were third in the league. There were highlights but we were overperforming, but in this moment we are underperforming. There are reasons for it, we have many injuries, so the team will be better if the injured ones return. We have to be calm, stick together, stick to the plan. We have to do it together."

  3. West Ham 2-0 Man Utd: Key statspublished at 14:40 23 December 2023

    • Manchester United have failed to score in four successive games in all competitions for the first time since November 1992, while it’s just the third time they’ve failed to score in three successive Premier League away games after April 2005 and August 2022.

    • West Ham have recorded successive Premier League wins over Manchester United for just the second time, following a run of three wins between December 2006 and December 2007.

    • For the first time since September 2012 (run of four), West Ham have won at least three home games in all competitions without conceding.

    • Manchester United have failed to win three successive Premier League away games under Erik ten Hag for the second time (D1 L2), previously doing so in May last season. Indeed, they’ve now failed to score in as many league games this season as they did in 2022-23 (7).

    • Jarrod Bowen is West Ham’s fifth-highest scorer in the Premier League with 38 goals, while all 11 in the competition this season have been non-penalty goals, the joint-most alongside Erling Haaland.

    • Nine of Mohammed Kudus’ 10 goals for West Ham in all competitions this season have come at the London Stadium; only Mohamed Salah (11) has more home goals for a Premier League side in all competitions in 2023-24.

    • In Kobbie Mainoo (18y 248d), Willy Kambwala (19y 120d) and Alejandro Garnacho (19y 175d), Manchester United started as many as three teenagers for only the fifth time in a Premier League game, and for the first time since May 2021 against Leicester City.

  4. Full-time: West Ham 2-0 Man Utdpublished at 14:29 23 December 2023

    Have your say

West Ham scored twice in six minutes to condemn Manchester United to an eighth Premier League defeat of the season at the London Stadium.

It took 72 minutes of a drab encounter for West Ham to find the opener when Lucas Paqueta lifted the ball into Jarrod Bowen's path and the Hammers' top scorer this season bundled past Andre Onana.

Mohammed Kudus, who has scored in his last three home games for West Ham, latched onto Kobbie Mainoo's defensive error to drill into the bottom corner and double the home side's lead.

Manchester United have won just one match out of their last five in the top flight and Erik ten Hag's side have lost more games than they have won this season across all competitions.

As a result West Ham leapfrog them into sixth place in the table as United drop to eighth.

Manchester United host unexpected title-challengers Aston Villa on Boxing Day while West Ham travel to Arsenal on Thursday 28 December.

  6. West Ham v Man Utd: Sutton's predictionspublished at 10:54 23 December 2023

    Sutton's Predictions image

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on Felix White, guitarist with 86TVs and a Fulham fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Manchester United parked the bus at Anfield, so will they do that here too? I don't think so.

I actually think West Ham will beat them, though. I often go for them to draw games, but I liked the way they went at Wolves.

In contrast, I wasn't impressed by Erik ten Hag's side at all. They may celebrate their draw with Liverpool but United fans should not be carried away with the way they got it. That just sums up how far they have fallen.

    Felix's prediction: 2-1

Because I'm doing this Fulham podcast, I get to sit in the press box at Craven Cottage and it's great because everyone is tightly packed together.

Last year, I was sitting there on my own watching Fulham play Manchester City, and David Moyes was directly behind me. He was there because West Ham were playing City next.

I want to be clear that I wasn't eavesdropping, but he was having a conversation about the game the whole way through. I had the best seat in the house because I was there on my own and didn't have a mate or anyone to talk to, so I could just listen to the way he was analysing the game.

It was extraordinary hearing someone that you never get to hear on that level.

If he can read City like that, I have a feeling he might be able to read United the way they are going. So, I'm backing West Ham to win this one.
