A cold but almost completely uninterrupted day of cricket all around the country.

A few bad light calls ended play a little prematurely, especially at Headingley. But not before a decent individual contributions at our seven gounds.

Highlight was England opener Ben Duckett's unbeaten 197 at Edgbaston as he moved to within three runs of a fifth career double century.

But a couple of England hopefuls were also in the runs.

Tom Banton was eventually run out late in the day for 92 as Somerset declared on 309-9 at Chester Road, Kidderminster, wherfe there three wickets for West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder.

And Durham's Ollie Robinson hit his fifth successive half-century, making 90 in support of South African Colin Ackermann's ton against in-form Essex.

As for a couple of slightly older England mainstays, Rory Burns ended the day on 39 as he mashalled champions Surrey's reply to Hampshire's 151, while Joe Root (65) and Harry Brook (44) looked well set overnight for Yorkshire down in Division Two against Derbyshire before the Leeds light failed.

Rory Burns is still there until the end.

It's been a long vigil for him but he's survived.

Hampshire have got a lot to think about tonight when they sit down and review the day's play.

Not necessarily about their batting but they are going to have to wonder if they could have done any better with the ball.

Gloucestershire were only too happy not to have face the final 6.2 overs.

Miles Hammond will return tomorrow oin 25 not out, with Engand keeper James Bracey on three.

After all the talk of hard-fought cricket, spinners involved and matches lasting the distance, this day has returned us more to the county cricket we know (and loathe).

14 wickets fell in 65 overs as Surrey won the toss and chose to bowl first on a pitch with some live green grass.

Hampshire were plunged into the mire at 64-6 before Nick Gubbins briefly settled the visitors with 45 and James Fuller's 39.

But Gubbins' wicket preceded another slump and Hampshire were rolled for just 151 with Dan Worrall, Gus Atkinson and Jordan Clark taking three wickets each.

Surrey found the going tough themselves as they crashed to 44-4.

Rory Burns and Ryan Patel restored order for the champions in a stand of 75 - the highest of the day - but Patel fell for 41 five overs before the close.

Burns walks off unbeaten on 39 and his side trail by 38.

Kemar Roach has done his job seeing out 16 balls.

Two overs to go at The Oval - a painfully slow over rate on a day of no delays.

Kemar Roach is out there as nightwatchman trying to see Surrey through without further damage.

That wicket of Ryan Patel will just have perked Hampshire up and give them hope of limiting the deficit on the morrow.

Jake Libby and nightwatchman Adam Finch comfortably saw out the five overs following Somerset's bold declaration late in the day.

And the hardy supporters (those that managed to get here, that is!!!) depart for their firesides to warm up ready for a bit more in the morning.

Nice to see from Warwickshire almost to a man except those right out to the deep boundary at the end came up to Ben Duckett and either shook his hand, high-fived him or patted him on the back.

If Rory Burns, 35 not out, and Ryan Patel, 41, can see them out it will cement an excellent day for Surrey.

They wobbled at 44-4 but this partnership has them in command.

Given that they were put in Northamptonshire will be pretty pleased with their efforts on a pitch that has been a good cricket wicket.

It's offered just a little bit to the bowlers from time to time. Most of the movement has been through the air.

Leicestershire have stuck at it but they'll probably be disappointed with the number of four balls that they bowled.

They will probably claim that the day has been balanced. But I think overall it's probably 70-30 Northamptonshire.

Oh, dear... the umpires have ruled that the deteriorating light is no longer fit for cricket and the players troop off.

Gloucestershire probably won't be too disappointed if they avoid the remaining 6.2 overs that are scheduled, having recently lost the wicket of Ollie Price.

Miles Hammond is 25 not out, with James Bracey on three.

Umpires Paul Pollard and Richard Kettleborough whipped out their light meters, took a quick reading - and that was that.

England opener Ben Duckett ends the day on 197 not out - and Warwickshire's outfielders, to a man, all made their way to join him on his way back to the Pavilion to shake his hand.

Batting now looking as easy as it has all day at The Oval.

James Fuller stamps the turf in frustration as he goes too full to Ryan Patel and gets driven for four through cover.

Brad Wheal then drops short and Patel pulls him through mid-on for four more.

Wheal then offers some width and Patel plays perhaps the shot of the day, cracking it off the back foot in front of point for another boundary and holding the pose.

He repeats the trick in Wheal's next over but without a same elan.

Somerset declare nine down - and that gives them five overs to have a bowl at the Worcestershire openers tonight.

Northamptonshire will feel fairly satisfied with their efforts after being put in to bat - three players have made half-centuries and one of them, George Bartlett, is still there on 71.

Emilio Gay, with 88, and Luke Procter, who made 64, were the other half-centurions as Northamptonshire reached 337-6, with Tom Scriven and Scott Currie taking two wickets apiece for Leicestershire.
