Super League: Hull KR 20-22 Warrington Wolves - Matt Dufty's try gives Wire thrilling victory

Matt Dufty's try in a see-saw encounter at Hull KR gave Warrington a third straight victory.

The lead changed hands four times, with both teams suffering from goalkicking problems, to ensure a tight contest.

Australian full-back Dufty was a key man throughout for Wolves, who have bounced back from their opening-day defeat at Catalans.

Rovers were left to rue several big errors as they suffered a second consecutive defeat, after last week's shock loss at Salford.

Wire were quickest out of the traps, with two tries in the opening 14 minutes.

Dufty was the architect of the first, feigning to go left and then turning back inside to send England captain George Williams - making a surprise early return after injury - flying over the line.

The hostile Craven Park crowd were silenced again minutes later as Rovers full-back Peta Hiku contested a Leon Hayes chip with Matty Ashton and the Warrington man grabbed the ball to touch down.

Tyrone May inspired the home side's revival with a prodigious leap above Dufty to gather Mikey Lewis' spiralling high kick and go over. Veteran wing Ryan Hall then edged to within five tries of Danny Maguire's record Super League haul from Oliver Gildart's brilliant one-handed offload.

Rovers seemed to be back on track, but they were suckered twice late in the half after James Batchelor had dropped the ball over the line.

Tom Opacic's error at the play-the-ball led to a Toby King try and Warrington went back in front when Dufty bounced off a poor Jez Litten tackle to kick through for Connor Wrench, who dribbled the ball over the line.

Warrington could have been comfortable, but with Josh Thewlis and Hayes missing three of four conversions, they were still within reach.

Rovers stepped on the power in the second half after Niall Evalds switched to full-back and Hiku went into the centres, and the excellent Lewis' pass freed Hall, who passed back inside for Gildart to score.

May's superb pass cut out two defenders to send Opacic over in the corner, but with Litten off the field, Batchelor missed both conversions to leave the game on a knife-edge.

Warrington won it after soaking up pressure and launching an attack which resulted in a scrum 10 metres out. They moved the ball quickly left and Dufty raced through a gap.

Hull KR coach Willie Peters told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I'm gutted for the players. Most of the time you put in an effort like that, you win. But it was execution, that last pass and last plays hurt us a little bit.

"Our start was poor and we had a poor end to the first half, but I can't fault the effort and the way we competed. We just found ways to hand the momentum back - and that is the most disappointing part.

"There are some individuals who, if they had their time again, would probably change a couple of things. I'm talking about the ones where Batch (James Batchelor) dropped it over the line and the two-v-one, last passes.

"It can be conditions, it can be pressure, but tonight it just didn't go our way."

Warrington head coach Sam Burgess:

"I enjoyed the game. I thought it was great. I thought both teams were very good. It was a great spectacle and all the people who watched that game would have enjoyed it.

"I was really happy with them because the game swung both ways a number of times. You have got to manage that, and we did. I'm really pleased for the group. They bombed a couple [of chances], we bombed a couple. We got two points, which is tough to do here.

"Hull KR are a good team, so we knew we were going to be on the back foot for periods. I thought it was a step forward for the club, but there were also things I wasn't happy with, things to work on."
