GB's Potter and Coldwell take top two in world triathlon opener

Britons Beth Potter and Alex Yee won their respective races at the World Championship Series' season-opening event in Abu Dhabi.

Potter, 31, who took up the event in 2017, finished in 57mins 56secs to win a first World Series event, with compatriot Sophie Coldwell second and American Taylor Spivey third.

Commonwealth champion Yee, 25, won the men's event in 52mins 53secs.

Portugal's Vasco Vilaca finished second with Brazil's Manoel Messias third.

Of her win, Potter said: "I've been working not only on my physical side but also mentally, so feel calmer when racing."

She added that a text from Olympic triathlon gold medallist Jonny Brownlee predicted success.

"Johnny text me and said you're going to win and I didn't quite believe it, I just said I'll do my best," she said.

Last year's series runner-up Georgia Taylor-Brown finished 15th, the result a first finish outside the top two in a World Series event since 2019 for the 28-year-old.

Reigning world and Olympic champion Flora Duffy was absent from the series opener.
