Sunderland's Roker Beach and Seaburn hosts the World Triathlon Championship Series for the first time this weekend.

The elite individual races will be shown live from 13:30 BST on BBC One on Saturday, and the mixed relay from 13:00 on BBC Two on Sunday.

Coverage will also be available on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.

Olivia Mathias, Barclay Izzard, Max Stapley and Jack Willis compete for Britain in the individual races while Beth Potter will compete in the relay.

Potter, 31, is the women's series leader after winning two of the season's five races, but has decided to focus on the team event.

Fellow Britons Georgia Taylor-Brown and Sophie Coldwell - who have also won races this season - will be absent.

Taylor-Brown is recovering from a muscle tear in her calf, while Coldwell is preparing for August's Olympic test event in Paris.

Olympic silver medallist Alex Yee, who is fourth in the men's standings, and former world champion Jonny Brownlee have also decided to focus on Paris next month.

Izzard, who returned from surgery on his collar bone in March, is thrilled to be competing in front of a home crowd.

"I've just recently got back into my run from a little injury but I'm feeling good for all three disciplines," he said.

"It's pretty exciting that it's at home and I get to have all my friends and family there who can come and watch.

"Having them there when I'm racing gives me some extra motivation when they're cheering me on."

The British leg is the final round of the season before the Grand Finals in Pontevedra, Spain in September.

Who are the leading athletes to follow?

France's Cassandre Beaugrand, second in the overall standings after winning the women's event in Hamburg this month, heads the women's line-up.

Mother of two Gwen Jorgensen, the 2016 Olympic champion, has recently returned to the sport after seven years and is eyeing a place in the American team at the Paris Olympics next year.

Series leader Vasco Vilaca of Portugal, New Zealand's Hayden Wilde and 2022 world champion Leo Bergere of France are the top men's names in the field.

Wilde claimed victory at the British race in Leeds last year and beat Yee to win the men's event in Hamburg.

What is the course?

Beginning with a 750m swim in Sunderland harbour, the athletes will then take on a five-lap 13.2-mile bike ride featuring one climb, three quick sections and multiple turns, before finishing with a two-lap 5km run for the medals.
