Great Britain's Sophie Alden and Olivia Mathias secured silver and bronze medals respectively in the World Triathlon Cup round in New Zealand.

Alden and Mathias led the group after a 750m swim in Napier, but they were soon caught during the 20km bike leg by eventual winner Sophie Linn of Australia.

With a 5km sprint to finish, Alden finished less than one second in front of Malden to claim silver.

"I exceeded expectations," said Alden.

"I knew I was in good shape coming into it but it's the first race of the season and you never know what you're going to get.

"I'm just so happy."

Like Linn, it was Alden's first appearance on a World Cup podium, while Mathias secured a World Cup medal for the second time in her career.
