60 years of African American life in pictures

Iconic photographer Frank Stewart captured key moments in American history. He reported on drammatically different moments in time, documenting the Ku Klux Klan, but also following the performances of giants of jazz like Wynton Marsalis. With his camera, he travelled to Africa and to Fidel Castro's Cuba. Through his lens, we experience a fragmented history of the United States.

Stewart's photos are currently showcased at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC. The exhibition Frank Stewart’s Nexus: An American Photographer’s Journey, 1960s to the Present is on view until September 3.
