Inside the harem where East meets West

It's been argued that art from the Orientalism period, mostly from the 19th Century and created for a European audience, subtly asserted Western superiority and pandered to the male gaze.

Now, Ardan Ozmenoglu, an Istanbul based artist who uses elements of pattern and repetition, traditionally found in Islamic art, along with a distinctly pop art sensibility, is reframing the often problematic imagery of Orientalism.

Join art critic Alastair Sooke as he meets Ardan at the Pera Museum to learn about the intriguing relationship between East and West.
