Lee Johnston: Fermanagh man a major doubt for NW 200 after suffering leg break

Fermanagh man Lee Johnston faces a race against time to be fit for the North West 200 in May after suffering a broken leg in Spain last month.

Johnston sustained the injury while testing in Cartagena three weeks ago.

The 34-year-old rider has been planning a comeback after suffering life threatening injuries in a crash during practice at last year's North West 200.

"I broke my right tib [tibula] and fib [fibula] literally in the first session," he said of the accident.

Speaking on his own YouTube blog, Johnston added: "It could have been worse and in a faster corner.

"It wasn't a mechanical issue, just a part broke so it was nobody's fault involved with the bike."

The former NW200 and Isle of Man TT winner, who is also hoping to return to racing in the British Championship, was testing at Cartagena by himself.

"I needed to ride a bike and that track day was my only option at the time," continued Johnston.

The Fermanagh rider only announced details of the accident on Monday.

He signed himself out of a Spanish hospital and has since returned to England where he has undergone two operations.

Johnston was scheduled to compete at the Daytona 200 in the USA this week but has now been ruled out of that event.
