TUI has made changes to its bag rules ahead of the summer holidays, and UK holidaymakers who don't follow them could face a charge. The airline has increased its free baggage allowance, which is great news for summer travellers, but there are still fines for those who don't stick to the rules.

All TUI Airways customers who booked their trips after December 21 for journeys after May 1 this year will be allowed a 20kg bag as standard when they fly with the airline. This limit goes up to 25kg for those staying at TUI BLUE, Holiday Village and A La Carte hotels. reports BirminghamLive.

Couples who have chosen one of TUI's wedding packages will also get 25kg hold luggage each when flying with TUI. Customers can also bring one piece of hand luggage with them on board weighing up to 10kg and with a maximum size of 55x40x20cm, like this half price Prestwick Cabin Bag from luxury suitcase brand Antler, now £85.

Passengers can bring one small personal item, like a handbag or laptop bag, and this must be small enough to fit under the seat. TUI passengers who go over their baggage allowance might be faced with an unexpected charge at the airport.

For TUI's short and mid-haul flights, if your luggage weighs more than it should, you'll need to pay a fee - £14 for each kg over the limit, or £55 for an extra 15kg bag. If you're flying long haul, it gets pricier - it's £18 per extra kg or £75 for an additional 15kg bag.

On their website, TUI gives customers a warning of the charges. It said: "If you exceed your baggage allowance, you'll have to pay an excess baggage fee at the airport."

The advice doesn't end there, as they also recommend a smart move to avoid last minute fees. They add: "Avoid excess luggage fees at the airport by booking extra kilos before you go with TUI Airways."

Other airlines handle overweight luggage in their own ways. EasyJet asks for an Airport Bag Fee of £48 and will put any extra cabin bags into the hold. Meanwhile, Ryanair charges up to £35.99 for extra luggage.

The Antler Prestwick Bag is half its usual price in the sale, at just £85. This bag fits the guidelines for TUI, Ryanair and Jet2, measuring 55x35x20cm. Or you could opt for the Cabin Max Metz Backpack from Amazon. It's exactly the right size for TUI's maximum carry-on bag allowance and costs £34.95.
