A medical centre in Bristol has submitted documents to South Gloucestershire Council for an expansion to allow for more services. Concord Medical Centre, in Braydon Avenue in Little Stoke, submitted plans last month, which will go to a consultation on March 21.

The medical centre is known for its chemotherapy services for the surrounding area, as well as the primary medical services available at most doctor surgeries. Its patient list stood at 12,300 patients back in 2016, and the catchment area includes the likes of Patchway, Little Stoke, Stoke Gifford and Bradley Stoke.

The expansion to the building which was originally built in the 1980s, has been expanded upon multiple times in the years since, including in 2016. The surgery is currently measured at 2,200 square metres.

In documents submitted, Concord said its expansion is needed to offer more services and to improve on ‘substandard room and corridor sizes’. It said also that relocating the surgery is not viable as the surgery is in the middle of its catchment, and moving would cause further traffic and longer journey times for patients.

As part of the planned works, some parts of the surgery would become out of action as roofing is replaced and replumbing and rewiring takes place. Services in those affected areas would be moved into another area of the surgery.

The surgery also noted that alongside the expansions, which would affect the first and second floors of the building, new hedges will be planted to give extra privacy. New shutters for extra security will be installed in health-related areas and at the pharmacy.

The design and access document concludes: “The new premises would help provide better care and convenience for patients with a reduction in unnecessary travel for routine tests to local hospitals. It would allow better patient confidentiality and a better working environment for staff.

“In the past the surgery has applied for extensions as they needed the additional space but this has meant that the surgery is reacting to the additional needs. This approval would allow them to plan for the future, be pro-activate in addressing the needs of the community, be ready to offer the services required and adapt as needs arose.”
