A community centre could soon be turned into a takeaway under new plans recently submitted. Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments.

Over the past seven days, those applications also included repairing historic stone walls near Temple Meads, and concreting over a front garden to make a driveway. Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council.

Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection.

The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees.

No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.

Turn community centre into a takeaway

A former Muslim community centre in Horfield could soon be turned into a takeaway. The owners of Shahporan Cultural and Community Centre, on Filton Avenue, are applying for permission to convert the empty building into a business selling hot food.

In planning documents, the owners said: “It has been empty for a considerable period of time. Recently the applicant was approached by two different potential tenants, who would be interested in renting the shop for a hot food takeaway business.

“The tenure by the Muslim community was not very successful. This eventually resulted in the majority of the community moving to more suitable places in Southmead in 2019.”

Historic stone walls at Temple Meads repaired

Historic stone walls at Temple Meads train station have been repaired. The walls leading up to the main entrance along Station Approach were previously chipped and damaged in multiple places.

Contractors working for Network Rail have now restored these old walls, as well as installing new safety railings. Network Rail is applying to the council to sign off a condition on the planning permission, as the work has undergone a final inspection.

Concrete over front garden to make a driveway

A homeowner in South Bristol is applying for permission to concrete over their front garden to make a driveway. The kerb outside the house on West Town Lane in Brislington would be dropped, to allow a car to be parked onto where the garden is currently.
