Three friends taking on a unique challenge to visit every Greggs store in Bristol today (April 11) said the 'vegan sausage roll' had been the highlight. Holly Vandyke, Laura Stone and friend Hannah (who could not give her full name) were walking to 20 Greggs across the city in one day - a journey which is 26 miles in length.

The trio, who all live in Bristol, are raising money for cancer charity Maggie’s Nottingham, which helped support a friend of the group’s mum. The charity provides support to those affected by cancer and supports those through the difficult process of dealing with cancer.

They started their day at 5.30am this morning (Thursday) and headed to the first Greggs store in Fishponds Road for 6am. When Bristol Live caught up with them in the early afternoon, they were on Greggs number 14 out of 20 outside the Galleries in Broadmead.

The women, who are all vegetarian or vegan, purchased an item at every Greggs they visited, including the classic vegan sausage roll, as well as coffee and pizza slices. News of their pilgrimage had spread across Bristol as Greggs customers and staff welcomed the women and wished them well on their journey.

Hannah said: “This has been a fun experience and it’s been a good exercise! The best thing so far has been spending time with Holly and Laura. It has also been so nice to see other parts of Bristol and raise money for Maggie’s at the same time. The staff in all the Greggs has been so friendly and supportive.”

By the time they had reached Broadmead, the trio had walked 16 miles already and said they were feeling tired but optimistic. Laura Stone added: “Mentally I think we’re doing so well. Definitely the best thing we’ve had is the vegan sausage roll!”

Holly Vandyke said: “We’ve done so well and are proud of ourselves, we’ve been supporting each other. Now we’re in Broadmead. It's the most difficult part as there’s so many Greggs in such a short distance.”

A JustGiving page for the fundraiser shows that nearly £600 has been raised so far.
