Avon Fire and Rescue crews are at the scene of a house fire in Knowle West. The ongoing incident today (Tuesday, August 9) is at a property on Downton Road.

Firefighters and police are asking people to avoid the area. PC Joe Iles tweeted at 11.15am: "Ongoing incident on Downton Road, please avoid area and find alternative route."

It is thought the grey smoke can be seen for miles around, with one witness sending in a photo from Pero's Bridge at the harbourside showing a plume visible beyond the M Shed.

No injuries reported

Avon Fire and Rescue service has confirmed no injuries were reported in the fire. The spokeswoman said the casualty was checked out at the scene, but no further treatment was required.

Cause of the fire determined to be 'accidental ignition'

The fire service has now put out a statement on the incident:

Crews from Hicks Gate, Southmead, Temple and Bedminster were called to reports of a property fire at 10:54. On arrival, crews found a fire affecting a two-storey building.

Crews rescued one adult casualty and two dogs from the scene. With all persons accounted for, and six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, crews used five high pressure hose reels and three 45mm jets to extinguish the fire.

Also in use were three turntable ladders, thermal imaging cameras and small gear. After a fire investigation, the cause of the incident was determined to have been accidental ignition.

Road remains shut for 'safety checks'

The road is still shut, according to Inrix:

Downton Road in both directions closed due to safety checks and earlier building fire at two storey building from West Heath Park to Kildare Road. Traffic is coping well.

The road has closed before 11:15 and the fire has now been put out, fire investigators remain at the scene.
