The Caribbean offers tourists a chance to enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. The stunning islands attract millions of UK travellers each year, especially in the colder months when the destination boasts winter sunshine.

But the UK Foreign Office has recently updated its advice for people traveling to Haiti due to violent unrest and the threat of gang attacks. The UK Government has instructed Brit travellers not to book trips to the beautiful seaside nation, which has seen turmoil escalate since February 29 with rogue groups storming key government buildings in the capital, Port-au-Prince, reports Birmingham Live.

These acts of hostility are reportedly part of an aggressive mission to oust Prime Minister Ariel Henry from his governing role. The services previously provided by British consular officials stationed in Haiti have also been disrupted, as outposts were relocated over to our neighbouring republic, Dominican Republic, in November 2019.

Officials at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) have confirmed that face-to-face consular assistance offered in Haiti is 'severely limited' and 'cannot be delivered in person'. The website reads: "FCDO advises against all travel to Haiti due to the volatile security situation. There are currently no British consular officials in Haiti and our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and cannot be delivered in person in Haiti."

"British nationals may get consular services assistance at our diplomatic mission in the Dominican Republic. If you choose to travel to or stay in Haiti against FCDO advice, try to avoid all crowds and public events, and take appropriate security precautions."

Armed men have set fire to police stations, closed the main international airports and stormed the country's two largest prisons, freeing over 4,000 inmates. Many lives have been lost, and over 15,000 individuals are now without homes after escaping neighbourhoods invaded by gangs.
