With the summer holidays just around the corner in 2024, many of us are getting ready for a much-needed break abroad. So we've put together a full list of passport rules from Jet2, Ryanair, Tui and easyJet for both international and domestic flights.

One of the biggest worries for travellers is making sure they have the right travel documents. If there's a problem with your ID or passport, you might not be allowed on the plane.

So, it's really important to check the rules before you start packing your bags and heading to the airport. Remember, the rules can be different for flights within the UK and flights to other countries.

Also, don't forget to check what luggage you're allowed to take with you. Each airline has different rules about what bags you can bring on board, reports Birmingham Live.

We've put together a list of guidelines from Jet2, Ryanair, TUI and easyJet about passport control. Keep reading to find out what each airline says on their websites.

Jet2 passport rules

When you're flying to another country, you need to show a passport or a national ID card. If you're flying inside the UK and you're 16 or older, you have to show a photo ID.

It's best to have a passport with you on these flights, but we can also take the following types of photo IDs if they're still good on the day you fly:

  • Citizen Card
  • Driving licence
  • Student ID card (international, National Union of Students or University/College ID)
  • Armed forces ID card
  • Police warrant card/badge
  • Airport employee’s security ID pass
  • Government issued ID card
  • Official Company ID card
  • Electoral ID card (EIC issued to eligible N Ireland citizens)
  • UK Council issued bus pass (Senior Citizens only)
  • Fire Arms certificate

Children under 16 don't need a photo ID if they're flying with an adult who has a good photo ID and can say who the child is. Since the UK isn't in the European Union anymore, countries in the EU need UK passports to be less than ten years old and still be good for at least three months after you plan to leave their country.

To make sure your passport is okay for travel, ask yourself two questions for each person going with you (this includes kids) if you can say yes to both, you're all set!

1. When you get to the EU, will your passport's "Date of issue" be less than 10 years old?

2. When you leave the EU, will your passport still have at least three months left (based on the "Date of expiry")?

If you're going to places that aren't in the EU, like Turkey, the rules might be different, so you should check here to learn more. Find out more here.

TUI passport rules

When flying with TUI, passengers must have valid ID with a photo, like an International Passport or EU National ID. It's up to you to make sure your photo ID is valid.

British Citizens need a valid 10-year passport. EU National IDs must be valid for entry into the country you're going to. Passports for British citizens can be used for travel to any EU country up until the passport expiry date.

The government suggests that on the day you travel, there should be at least six months left on your passport. To go to Europe, you need a minimum of three months left on your passport from the day you plan to travel home.

If your passport doesn't meet these requirements, you might not be able to travel. Some countries outside of the EU require a British passport to have a certain period of validity left on it, such as 6 months, or blank pages.

You can visit the gov.uk website for advice by country. UK Citizens can look at the gov.uk website for information on passports, visas and health. People from other countries should check with their own governments.

It's also your job to check if you need a visa to enter the country you're going to. British kids under 16 years old, including newborns, need to have a child passport. This passport is valid for 5 years at first, but can be renewed for another 5 years after that.
