UK holidaymakers heading to Spain have been warned to be extra careful on the roads after a single traffic camera issued a total of 79,000 fines. The camera is located just outside the Valdeinfierno tunnel in Los Barrios, in southern Spain, and it gave out the most traffic tickets in the country over the course of 2023 with each fine costing up to 500 euros.

It gives out an average of 217 fines per day. Another busy camera is on the Jerez-Los Barrios stretch of the A-381 motorway in Andalusia, a popular tourist destination in southern Spain, which dished out a total of 68,321 fines last year.

Andalusia has 372 cameras, but Catalonia and along the Costa Brava, the region where Barcelona and Girona can be found, has the most with 721. The Castilla y Leon region in northern Spain has 333 cameras.

The Basque Country and Madrid each have over 230 cameras, followed by Galicia with 182 and the Valencian Community with 179. If you break the rules in Spain, you could be fined up to £514, reports Birmingham Live.

Road experts have warned that the average cost of traffic fines in Spain is around six hundred Euros. There are three types of violations: minor, major, and very serious.

Each type has a different penalty fee. Minor violations typically cost about 100 euros, major ones cost 200 euros, and very serious violations can cost 500 euros or more.

If you pay a traffic fine in Spain within 20 days of the violation, you can get a 50 per cent discount. This is similar to the UK system, where traffic fines and parking penalties are reduced if they're paid within a certain time frame.
