A pretty French town within easy reach of Bristol Airport has been tipped as one of Europe's cheapest destinations for 2024. Narbonne is often referred to as the country's 'secret Riviera', with impressive architecture and a sandy coastline.

The budget-friendly spot has been recommended by foreign exchange company eurochange. A spokesperson said: "A UNESCO World Heritage site, this southern French town has everything you could ever wish for from a holiday to France, including vineyards, a beautiful cathedral, a canal and a gorgeous sandy beach."

Its nearest airport is just 40 minutes away in Beziers, which is served by direct flights from several UK airports, the Express reports. This includes Bristol - read Bristol Live's travel guide to Beziers itself here.

Narbonne Plage is a key attraction, stretching for almost five kilometres. Tripadvisor's guide to the town reads: "Nestled inland and away from its flashier French Riviera neighbours, Narbonne embraces a slower pace of life.

"The sleepy Canal de la Robine slices through this former river port, where salt marshes and lagoons filled with fishing boats draw plenty of artists but few tourists." Tripadvisor users recommend visiting the Abbaye de Fontfroide, an ancient abbey about 15 kilometres south-west of Narbonne.

One visitor, 'Lizzie49Colin', wrote on Tripadvisor: "Remarkable monastery. Peaceful, architectural landmark of the region, beautiful gardens and stunning windows in the church."

Narbonne Cathedral is another top sight in the town, even though it's still not finished after all these years. 'Debi M' said on Tripadvisor: "Quite beautiful chapel! One of the highest roofs we have seen other than Notre Dame's in various cities throughout France!"

Foodies will love Les Halles de Narbonnes, a big market selling charcuterie, cheeses, pastries, pizzas and more inside a beautiful building accented with steel and glass. Visitors say it's perfect to buy picnic items to enjoy by the water. If budget is no object then the La Table Lionel Giraud restaurant boasts not one but two Michelin stars, and offers tasting menus starting from £120.

Average flight prices from Bristol are cheapest in April and May, according to Skyscanner, with returns from just £37. According to the same site, the average price of a hotel in Narbonne is £83 per night.
