We developed a three dimensional musculoskeletal computer model of the human jaw to evaluate the alignment and the fit of the prosthetic joint replacement. When we bite into a minty, for example, we generate around about 20 kilograms of chewing force. And when we clench our teeth maximally, we can generate around about 100 kilograms of bite force.

It was absolutely vital that we were able to know the response of the implant to those loads and to be sure that the implant wasn't going to fail when we placed the implant inside the patient. While we've been working over the last three years in developing prosthetic jaw joint replacement, we now have the tools in place to design and manufacture joint replacements in other parts of the body, such as the shoulder, the hip, or even the spine.
