Alexander Hamilton establishes the Revenue Marine Service
Founded as an enforcement agency for customs laws, the organization was merged with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915 to become the U.S. Coast Guard.

August 5, 1960
Upper Volta declares independence from the French
The country, now known as Burkina Faso, was under French rule for more than 60 years.

August 6, 1945
The U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II
Most of the city was destroyed and estimates of the number of people killed outright or shortly after the blast have ranged upward from 70,000.

August 8, 1963
The Great Train Robbery hits the Glasgow-London Royal Mail Train
The heist, carried out by 15 men, and 2 accomplices, resulted in the theft of about 120 mail bags containing 2,600,000 pounds sterling.

August 9, 1814
The Treaty of Ft. Jackson is signed, ending the Creek War
The treaty followed the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, in which more than 800 Creek warriors were slaughtered, forcing the Creek to cede 23 million acres of land to the U.S. government.
