The great eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroys multiple Italian cities
After centuries of quiescence, Vesuvius erupted, burying Pompeii, Oplontis, and Stabiae under ashes and Herculaneum under a mudflow.

August 26, 1920
The Nineteenth Amendment becomes part of the U.S. Constitution
The first constitutional amendment for women’s voting rights was introduced in Congress back in 1878.

August 27, 1939
The He 178, a turbojet-powered aircraft, makes the first jet flight
Developed by German designer Ernst Heinrich Heinkel, the He 178, and aircraft like it, dramatically changed the air transportation industry.

August 28, 1963
More than 200,000 people march on Washington, D.C., for civil rights
A high point of the civil rights movement, the event is remembered for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

China signs the Treaty of Nanjing to end the first Opium War
