NARRATOR: The open-air market is a lively, active place in many southern African countries. Food, clothing, utensils—almost any item one can think of—are sold here. Because of the temperate climate fruits and vegetables are available year-round.
There are fruits and vegetables native to Africa and others that are grown or originated in another continent. Produce that is exported to other countries includes bananas, corn, beans, rice, coffee, and cloves.
Sugarcane is bought locally and is also an important export in many countries of southern Africa. Peanuts are another important export, especially for Botswana and South Africa.
After a long day at the market, women return home with their purchases and the income from their produce.
