Puerto Rican nationalists attempt to assassinate President Harry Truman.
The would-be assassins were forerunners of the separatist organization Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (“Armed Forces of National Liberation”).

November 7, 2000
Hillary Clinton becomes the first first lady to win elective office.

The East German government opens the Berlin Wall.
