How the U.S. helps pierce the fog of war in Ukraine

No American has been more deeply involved in the war in Ukraine than Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He took CBS News national security correspondent David Martin to a top secret Pentagon command center where his staff tracks Ukraine's counter-offensive against invading Russian forces. The U.S. is sharing battlefield intelligence with Ukraine, Milley said, but its military retains "target selection and authority to strike."

Top military leaders on U.S. credibility

During their first public appearance before Congress since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were asked by Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, whether the chaotic pullout "damaged" U.S. credibility with allies. Milley said that "'damaged' is one word that could be used," and Austin said U.S. credibility "remains solid." Watch their remarks.

Austin: "We're not close" yet on evacuations

In their first remarks since Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley spoke to reporters about the mass evacuation of Americans and at-risk Afghans and addressed questions about the whether the U.S. was taken by surprise by the speed of the country's collapse. "We're not close to where we want to be in terms of getting the numbers through," Austin said. Milley, asked whether he had "seen this coming," that Afghan forces would not be prepared for the fight with the Taliban. "No, I did not," he said. "Nor did anyone else see a collapse of an army that size in 11 days."
