Manchester United have decided to keep Scott McTominay - and give him a new deal in the process.

Less than 12 months after being deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, the Scotland international has since proved himself integral to Erik ten Hag’s Reds. McTominay has scored nine goals in all competitions this term, including seven in 23 Premier League appearances - more than double his previous career- best for a single season.

That form has not only ensured he is firmly back in favour with under pressure Dutch coach Ten Hag, it has also convinced the club’s new football hierarchy he is a vital part of the future. Which is why Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS Group aim to secure the lifelong Red on a longer contract - and reward him with a pay rise.

McTominay, 27, has 15 months to run on his current £60,000 per week deal - and the club have an option to extend that by an another year.

Yet despite that meaning there is no urgency on United’s part to tie him down now, Ratcliffe and Co reckon McTominay performances on the pitch - and exemplary attitude off it - are exactly what is required moving forward.

He can expect to a double his money to £120,000-a-week in the new contract. That will stop potential transfer interest over the summer when McTominay, who was the £45million target of Newcastle and West Ham last July, will be a major figure in Scotland’s challenge at the Euros in Germany.

Ahead of winning his 48th cap on Friday night in the 4-0 defeat to Holland, McTominay had been named Scotland Player of the Year. That followed a sensational qualifying campaign in which he scored seven times in eight games for Steve Clarke’s men.
