For years, Europe's economies were powered by Russian gas, to their full satisfaction. Wealthy oligarchs moved their capital through European financial institutions unhindered and invested in English football clubs or Dutch superyachts. The European defense industry was at a low ebb, convinced that war on European soil was a thing of the past.

All this changed when Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Russian assets in the EU were frozen and Europe had to urgently look for new energy sources. Finland and Sweden joined NATO and the Europe struggled to dust off its arms industry.
