As you probably know, the Halifax Examiner has qualified for the Digital News Subscription Tax Credit, under section 118.02 of the Income Tax Act.

The tax credit allows individuals to claim up to $500 for subscriptions to qualified Canadian journalism organizations. See here for more details, and for the tax forms necessary to claim the credit.

The Examiner’s QCJO# is Q9427428.

Subscriptions from the years 2020 through 2024 are eligible. The tax credit applies to individuals, not companies or institutions.

GST/HST

Tax is included in the subscription price.
If you need the tax on your annual payment separated out (business/govt/org accounts only, please) email Billing/invoices and use the subject line “Tax separated receipt.”

These invoices must be made manually, so your patience is appreciated.

To find the amount of GST/HST you paid:

  1. Add up the total of your receipts for that year.
  2. On a calculator, subtract 13.04%.
  3. This will give you the correct total for the subscription alone.
  4. Subtract that subscription price from your total paid.
  5. What remains is the 15% tax.

YOUR RECEIPTS

CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS:

Find your 2023 receipts like this:

  1. Log in, and then click My Account in the header (on a phone, it’s in the menu)
  2. On your account page, in the dashboard on the left, click My Subscription
  3. At the bottom of the next page you’ll see all of your orders since the migration on October 20, 2022. Note: only orders made since that date are available here.
  4. Click the buttons labeled Invoice to download PDFs.
  5. If you paid annually, there will be one invoice each year since October 20, 2022; if you paid monthly, there will be an invoice for each monthly payment.
  6. Sorry, at this point we cannot provide an annual invoice for monthly payments. (Good time to switch to an annual subscription?)

For CREDIT CARD payments made before October 20, 2022:

  1. Your receipts were sent automatically from Stripe to your email every month (or year) immediately upon payment, to the email you used to subscribe.
  2. If you don’t see them in your inbox, please look in your junk or spam folder (Gmail is notorious for doing this.)
  3. In your email’s search box, search for the subject line “Your receipt from Halifax Examiner, Inc.” You can save and print each receipt, depending on how your email server works.

PAY PAL PAYMENTS:

You will find your receipts in your PayPal account, because PayPal is not connected to our website.

CHEQUE OR E-TRANSFER PAYMENTS:

If you didn’t receive a receipt when you paid, please email Iris.
