We’re providing accessible and exceptional care to make a healthier Boston.

About us

Boston Medical Center models a new kind of excellence in healthcare, where innovative and equitable care empowers all patients to thrive. We combine world-class clinicians and cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, quality care that extends beyond our walls. Together, we're reimagining healthcare for Boston - and the world. As an award-winning health equity leader, our diverse clinicians and staff interrogate racial disparities in care and partner with our community to dismantle systemic inequities. This commitment to equity is the basis of all our work, particularly as 70 percent of our patients are people of color. In addition, nearly 30 percent of our patients speak a primary language other than English, and so we offer all our care and services in over 160 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, and more. As an academic medical center, BMC is building the future of health care. Our world-renowned researchers currently oversee over 660 research projects in a wide variety of areas, and as the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC is devoted to training future generations of health care professionals. BMC's clinical expertise, commitment to equity, quality, and sustainability efforts have been consistently recognized by organizations across the country, including the federal government, American Nurses Credentialing Center (Magnet designation), U.S. News, Leapfrog, Human Rights Campaign, the Lown Institute, Becker’s Healthcare, and more. • This week, BMC’s Thea James, MD, MPH, MBA, Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer, traveled to Washington D.C. and joined the ACLU for a Congressional briefing to increase support and funding for community violence intervention programs. Nearly two decades ago, BMC founded one of the country’s first hospital-based violence prevention programs, the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP). Dr. James and the team guide victims of community violence through physical and emotional recovery by empowering them with skills, services, and opportunities. This approach enables victims to return to their communities with options that bring hope and healing into their lives and into the community. By empowering all patients to thrive, we’re committed to delivering equitable care in Boston and beyond. https://bit.ly/3wvJIrU

  • This National Nurses Week, don’t miss your chance to honor BMC nurses like Monica Germain, BSN, RN, CCRN, (pictured) and her leading work. Donate by midnight, May 12: https://bit.ly/3Ww0IJ4 Best-in-class care means not only treating the symptoms—it's uncovering the root cause of illness and designing interventions for lasting health. Monica is doing just that as the first nurse health equity fellow for the Ravin Davidoff Health Equity Fellowship at BMC.

  • Boston Medical Center was honored to be selected by the Healey administration to host key leaders from across the state to discuss the intersection of housing and healthcare. Thank you, Governor Healey, for convening and advancing this critical conversation. BMC is proud to support affordable housing initiatives and community partnerships that help people achieve their housing goals. We see the impact that homelessness and housing insecurity has on the health of people across the communities that we serve. Investing in housing means investing in the health and wellbeing of our communities.

  • “Nurse Jane Makson, RN, in the Solomont Center eases me through the moments of fear during chemotherapy.” A nurse manager at a local hospital, Rob (pictured) understands how important the nurse-patient bond can be. Now, as a BMC patient, Rob experiences that special bond in a new way. Know a BMC nurse who went above and beyond for you or a loved one?
