Rotavirus is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in children worldwide and has a 2.5 percent fatality rate among infected children in low-income countries. To protect children from rotavirus by ensuring vaccine access and monitoring vaccine effectiveness, we worked with 11 priority countries alongside the World Health Organization , Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These programs are helping the public health community determine the effectiveness and safety of newer rotavirus vaccines and address ongoing barriers to access. Earlier this month, CDC Foundation staff and a small group of supporters had the opportunity to tour the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The DVBD is the national and international leader in researching, preventing and controlling viruses and bacteria spread by vectors including mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. During this visit, the group remarked that “it was a wonderful tour and so special to meet the enthusiastic and dedicated CDC staff in Fort Collins” and they “enjoyed it immensely and learned a lot about entomology science and the wonderful work that the CDC Foundation is doing. The staff was so passionate and articulate about their work.” To learn more about the DVBD you can visit: https://lnkd.in/efyEjNtb
