With the launch of IOS 17 Apple is not stopping with cookie deprecation and is going even further to halt user-level tracking by removing unique to the user tracking parameters at the end of clicked URLs. This will eliminate even more buy-side tracking by advertisers. By now, most of adtech LinkedIn is aware of the massive 1.2 billion euro ($1.3 billion) fine levied against Facebook for violating GDPR data sharing regulations. But what does this indicate for the larger ecosystem? Largely, that sharing and/or using data without consent or in violation of the privacy laws in a specific region won't continue to be ignored. In the US, as of this posting, 11 states have live privacy laws and another 10 have active Bills heading for a vote. And there's more to come. As the constraints around data use tighten, THIRD party data and passed identifiers traditionally used in the RTB environment to understand users and the value of a connected bid request will become less and less available. Unless publishers proactively leverage their FIRST party relationships with their users and enrich their bid requests before sending them upstream for auction, those requests face the reality of not being bought or generating significantly lower CPMs. Seller defined audience codes and pre-identified private marketplaces will substantially replace the process of upstream buyers cross referencing passed identifiers to THIRD party data sets to understand the user behind the bid request.
