About us
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an international news organization headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic and Washington, D.C., with bureaus throughout Central Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Reporting in 27 languages across 23 countries, RFE/RL is one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world, providing accurate, uncensored news and open debate in countries where a free press is threatened and disinformation is pervasive. Across RFE/RL’s broadcast markets, RFE/RL journalists give audiences what they can't always get from their own local media: uncensored, trusted news. Reporting via digital, television, and radio platforms, RFE/RL has a measured weekly reach of over 40 million people. A private nonprofit, RFE/RL is funded by the U.S. Congress through the U.S. Agency for Global Media. RFE/RL's editorial independence is protected by U.S. law.

Today marks six months since Alsu Kurmasheva, a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty editor and a dual U.S. and Russian citizen, was detained in #Russia. CPJ is calling on the Russian authorities to immediately release her and drop all charges against her. For their part, U.S. authorities should recognize Alsu as ‘wrongfully detained’ and ensure her quick release. #FreeAlsu

For half a year, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been held hostage in a cramped cell in Kazan, unable to speak to her husband and two children. Russia is unjustly detaining more and more Americans, including journalists like Alsu and The Wall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich. We believe that journalism is not a crime.
