Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended an updated COVID-19 vaccine for everyone six months and older. COVID-19 vaccines are still available at no cost to most people living in the U.S. through insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. However, some people may not have insurance or the option for a no-cost vaccine. Unfortunately, COVID-19 continues to be one of the leading causes of death in Los Angeles County. We at Shared Harvest Fund are maximizing our efforts to reduce severe illness of COVID-19 in our community through vaccinations, testing and treatment. There will be a few changes for LA County residents in their access to preventative resources. The federal government will continue to make its supply of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments such as Paxlovid and Molnupiravir available to residents at no cost regardless of a person’s insurance coverage. In California, new laws require insurance plans, including Medicare or Medi-Cal, to cover the cost of vaccines, testing and Paxlovid for COVID-19 treatment through Nov. 11, 2023. Exact coverage may vary depending on an individual's insurance plan. Residents without insurance may receive free at-home test kits or PCR tests for COVID-19 at public health clinics and vaccination sites or at community health centers. Thursday, May 11, marks the end of the Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency declaration. For the moment, COVID vaccines are still available for free to adults and children. But, it is widely expected that the vaccines will shift to the commercial market soon (similar to flu vaccines).
