IOP Publishing was one of our very first publishing partners and so I couldn’t be happier that they have again expanded their Journal Home partnership with ResearchGate, increasing from 18 to 50 of their journals! This is a real success story. Having initially started with a pilot of just 7 titles in 2022, IOPP already expanded their collaboration in 2023 to 18 of their key journals. To see this now extended again to include all their #openaccess journals, a majority of their subscription portfolio, and a number of their partner’s titles, really celebrates the powerful reach and impact that Journal Home is creating for them. In a great new interview with Miriam Maus, Chief Publishing Officer at IOP Publishing, she discusses the rich insights and unique impact that Journal Home is delivering. This partnership is helping IOPP increase the prominence and usage of their journals, build a better understanding of the global audiences interacting with their journals, and attract high quality submissions and publications. More than 170,000 full text articles covering all areas of physics from IOPP’s leading journals are now available to ResearchGate’s 25m+ members through this partnership – with 220,000+ authors already having these added to their profiles! This is further testament to the value this partnership is creating for IOPP’s journals and the global community of physics researchers. Should society publishers working in the same field collaborate or compete? Is their not-for-profit status their unique selling point? Last week, the three largest physics society publishers announced a collaboration centred on the tagline "Science is our only shareholder". Historically, academics often preferred to publish in society journals. But times have changed. New fully open access entrants often offer authors an easier and faster route to publication. Authors have been voting with their feet. Will other society publishers follow suit and build their own alliances and move from competition to collaboration? Can we expect the ACS and the RSC to publicly declare a relationship that has chemistry? How about the AHA, ACC and ESC? Will they express more ❤️ for each other than they have in the past? Some of these alliances seem highly unlikely given past history, but desperate times can require desperate measures. The entire academic board of Elsevier open access journal, Neuroimage, has resigned in protest over publication fees, which they say do not reflect the real cost involved. When publishing their research, scientists must choose between paying to make their results open to all, or restricting access to those individuals or institutions who can afford to pay subscriptions. Neuroimage charges over 2,700GBP to publish a research paper in its journal. Many traditional journals also offer open access routes. For example, Springer Nature Group currently charges 8,490GBP to publish OA. If an institution wishes to access the pay-walled content, an annual paper only subscription to Nature has a list price of over 10,000GBP. I couldn’t be happier to see Wiley and ResearchGate extend their partnership today to now include a total of 649 journals on ResearchGate – including the entire open access portfolios of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)! From the beginning, our partnership with Wiley has been grounded in our shared vision that a connected researcher ecosystem can make research more open and accessible. As Wiley’s experience shows, bringing their high-quality content to our highly engaged researcher community on ResearchGate has real benefits for readers, authors, and their publishers. Wiley’s initial pilot lasted for 18 months, with all version-of-record articles from 141 journals syndicated to ResearchGate. In that time, Wiley have seen strong signals of increased visibility and engagement for their journals and articles: 🚀 Their content was accessed an incredible 6.7 million times on ResearchGate in 2022, with no evidence that this decreased readership on Wiley’s own platform in any way. 🌍 Wiley also reported seeing greater geographic diversity of the audience on ResearchGate when compared to Wiley Online Library. 🕰 And they have seen higher article usage for older content (older than fifty weeks) on ResearchGate, in comparison to their own platform! It’s especially exciting to see that over 500 Wiley journals will now be benefiting from the enhanced Journal Home experience on ResearchGate, offering even greater visibility for these titles. I can’t wait to see the results from the next stage of this partnership!
