When I meet a person like Toby Southgate, I’m always so intrigued about how the hell it all happened? How does a British person that started off in investment banking end up as a global CEO of a Swedish creative business owned by American owned Stagwell? Here’s a timeline: Begins in Investment banking. Fails and hates it. >> Joins and launches a Scottish branding agency in New York having never been to the US before. Succeeds. >> Then joins a WPP owned branding agency and launches them in Abu Dhabi. >> Is then responsible for elegantly merging the branding agencies together between NY, London & UAE. >> Then joins advertising behemoth, McCann taking the baton from one of the most prolific leaders in advertising. (Having never worked at an ad agency) >> Now global CEO of Swedish born, Stagwell owned Forsman & Bodenfors. Toby is the definition of a holistic creative services leader. He sees business opportunities, not briefs. He sees creative solutions. Not micro sliced segmentation. He sees human potential when others might see technological competition. And, I think most encouragingly, he sees the creative services industry as being the most exciting place to work in the world. Thanks for your honesty and candour, Toby. I bloody loved that.
